Is ERP Getting Stodgy In Its Old Age? Everyone agrees that companies in the Fortune 500 -- even the Global 2000 -- are a saturated market where enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is concerned. While large vendors like Oracle, PeopleSoft and SAP continue to develop modules and upgrades, the days of the enormous new suite installation seem to be over.
Does that mean technological innovation is stalled in the field? Yes and no, Bill Henry, PeopleSoft vice president of marketing for global services, told NewsFactor. At the level of the individual application, not much is going on in terms of adding new bells and whistles. But if one takes the term "innovation" a bit further, vendors are scrambling to roll out new offerings to both current and prospective customers.

ERP System Overcomes Language Barriers Argent International (Novi, Michigan) manufactures custom engineered adhesive-backed components for the automotive and industrial markets. While communication at the company's facility was good, Argent, which is highly customer focused, wanted to further enhance its communication between shifts and between departments. Like most companies, many of Argent's manufacturing employees have diverse backgrounds, contributing to the communication challenge. In addition, Argent felt that electronically automating information between shifts and between employees could improve productivity through greater data accuracy.

A New Approach to ERP Customization
“Active ERP” refers to the incorporation of triggers, alerts and workflow procedures into the logic of the ERP system. These differ significantly from one customer to another, and even among different departments of the same customer. Therefore, their effective incorporation into the ERP program is critical in a true customization of the software to the customer’s needs.
However, eventhough workflow and business rules have become almost mandatory for ERP systems, yet, all ERP systems on the market today require users to hard code (in the source code) triggers, alerts and workflow procedures that are not predefined. This forces them to recode the triggers and procedures when installing the next release (upgrade).

ERP Vendors Suffer Disconnect with Customers Enterprises spend in the millions of dollars to install their ERP systems, and then lay out a big chunk every year for license renewals and maintenance. In that price range, one would expect them to come out of the experience largely satisfied with their choices. Global Exchange fuses with Haht in B2B buy Business-to-business e-commerce software maker Global Exchange Services said Thursday that it is buying data synchronization specialist Haht Commerce in a $30 million deal.
Through the acquisition, Global Exchange aims to broaden its reach in providing so-called product information management and data synchronization software. Data synchronization applications automate the process by which suppliers, manufacturers and retailers share information relevant to issues such as inventory status and product design.
