GlaxoSmithKline Move May Lift ERP Community

By Doug Caverly

GlaxoSmithKline is the second largest pharmaceutical corporation in the world, which makes everything it does extremely important. And its latest move is extremely important for the enterprise resource planning community, as GSK is liable to introduce an ERP system.

A CIO article reported, "GSK said it was investigating 'a move towards a single Enterprise Resource Planning platform' as part of a range of cost reduction plans being instigated at the drug maker. . . . GSK, a CIO 100 ranked manufacturer, said it will deliver savings of 1.7 billion by 2011."

It's possible that a lot of other companies, both large and small, will try to follow in GSK's footsteps since GSK is so successful. The pharma industry is a wealthy one, too, so all sorts of money may be up for grabs.

ERP providers would naturally profit from any such trend. People on the other side of the ERP supply chain would also probably benefit, since competition for the extra money would result in better offerings.

It's hard to see any downside, really. So let's just hope that GSK pushes ahead with its ERP plans with all possible speed, and that a whole bunch of rivals feel a need to follow the leader.
